Right outside of Laramie, Wyoming there is a family that got tired of the city life. They decided to move to a tiny town and establish a ranch. Rebel Ranch is a family owned regenerative farm that raises grass fed and finished bison. They are also planning on experimenting with other healthy ways to finish the bison including using carrots and alfalfa. The farm owner, Joshua, has a background in the health and wellness industry and is very interested in the health benefits of regenerative farming. Besides the bison, they also have wild mustangs, chickens, and turkeys. During our stay at Rebel Ranch, the wild mustangs came up to our camper, giving us a nice little surprise.
Joshua bought the land back in 2021, right after the land had experienced a forest fire in 2020. The elevation is over 8,000 feet, and the mountainous land is breath taking.

The bison that they raise are extremely good for you. Bison fat is an orange color because of the carotene, which can improve eye health, immune system, and your skin health. Bison meat typically has less fat and calories than other animal meats and contains more protein than them as well. Because the bison is grass fed and constantly rotated into new pastures, the environment is healthier and therefore the bison is healthier. In the days before agriculture, the nomadic people would follow the bison to wherever they were grazing. They had to constantly move because the bison didn’t just stay in one pasture and eat all the grass, they moved to different areas for fresh, healthy grass. This let the old land rest and grow back healthier and stronger. At Rebel Ranch, they are working with nature and not against it. Just like we do at Willow Creek Ranch, they are mimicking nature by rotating the livestock to new pastures and letting the other land rest. What results from this is healthier, more nutrious meat.

A lot of people don’t know that the proper term for buffalo is actually bison. Most stores that sell bison meat label the meat as buffalo, so the people buying and eating the meat don’t actually know what they’re eating. At Rebel Ranch, you know exactly what you’re getting. They’re super honest about how they raise their bison and how nutrious it is for you. Because they rotate their bison on healthy pastures of grass, the bison are super healthy. Therefore, their meat is very nutrient-dense.
